Graduate cracks the code to career development

A graduate recruit at a leading Warrington technology employer has found the code to his career development – thanks to a £6,000 scholarship.

Evan Morris has landed a place on the country’s leading boot camp for young computer coders with help from his employer and their landlord.

The software assurance engineer who works for Avanite at The Base, Warrington’s technology hub, is to spend 12 weeks on an intensive boot camp hosted by Code Nation, the country’s leading private software training organisation.

Coding is a key skill for a wide range of technology careers and applications. It uses a programming language to tell a computer to behave in a certain way and fulfil certain tasks, such as to take an image and make it move.

“Coding is such a critical skill and I was self-teaching at home but it was very time-consuming given my day job,” explained Evan.

“Sylvie Morton at Langtree heard of my ambitions and identified a scholarship from Code Nation and my bosses did the rest. Being on the boot camp will make a huge difference to my career.”

When the 12-week course is complete Evan will then convert to a Level 4 apprenticeship in coding and can decide to continue onto a part-time degree apprenticeship whilst he is still working.

“We encourage all our team to up-skill,” explained Peter Jones of Avanite, which is behind the market-leading Webdata Control product. “In a high-skill economy such as ours it is key to remaining competitive and our ability to innovate. Evan has jumped at the opportunity and we’ll continue to support him and other colleagues in their quest to improve.”

Commenting on her role in identifying the course, Sylvie Morton of building manager Langtree explained that such proactivity is part of the customer care environment at The Base.

“We have an eco-system here where our tenants all share ideas and information to help them grow and compete and we seek to play as full a part as possible in that process. I shall look forward to hearing of Evan’s progress.”
